Three votes are legally required, the board's quorum of votes, to support the final decision on applying for a casino license.

In a regularly scheduled public meeting this morning, the Michigan Gaming Control Board unanimously approved the renewal of a one-year license for three public Detroit casinos - MGM Grand Detroit Casino, Motor City Casino and Hollywood Casino in Grigtown.

Three votes are legally required, the board's quorum of votes, to support the final decision on applying for a casino license.

"Renewing our casino license reflects our ongoing commitment to running reputable and responsible facilities," said Henry Williams, MGCB's executive director. "That means a commitment to maintaining a high level of quality, security and fair play within the industry. The renewal of this license affirms the casino's commitment to operate as a responsible and valuable corporate citizen within Michigan who positively contributes to the state's gambling industry while ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all sponsors."

MGCB has established a casino license application process and must share the information with MGCB. In order to renew the casino license, MGCB must conduct a comprehensive evaluation of various aspects of the casino, including its financial stability, operational integrity, compliance with legal and regulatory frameworks, and responsible gaming practices.

Licensees are taxed at an 18% tax rate on adjusted total receipts and transfer bet taxes via electronic money transfers daily. State receives development contract payments on adjusted gross receipts that qualify for 8.1% bets and the City of Detroit 9.9% bets. Casinos also pay an 8.4% tax on adjusted gross receipts eligible for retail sports betting, plus annual fees to cover the state's regulatory costs.

Michigan's Casino Gaming Act contains standards to promote responsible gaming. Licensee must indicate the state's free gambling helpline number, 800-270-7117, on all entrances, each electronic money transfer terminal and credit location, and all printed ads and promotional materials.

3 Detroit Casinos May Get License Renewal Again in August 2024.
